CHAPTER ONE
Early summer-2007-Turks and Caicos Islands
Morton "Jock" Baffert sat on the veranda of his Blue Mountain house
looking east over Turtle Cove and Grace Bay. Outside the reef, the
persistent trade winds swept the dark blue Atlantic Ocean with whitecaps
and streaks of foam. Jock chilled over his second ice cold Turk's Head
Lager and wondered which of the island's watering holes his wife was
patronizing that night. The girls on this island were known to tip a few
toddies after their committee meetings, and Providenciales had a wide array
of choices. Many of those bars overlooked the reef-ringed oceanfront,
some were on the secluded back bays, and others viewed the picturesque
interior lagoons. Jock never begrudged "Kat" her time with her charitable
friends. She was always rushing to this event or that, but still managed to
run Provo's most successful construction equipment rental business. He
had been home since 6:00 p.m. after a busy two-trip day at his dive business.
All three of his boats had been full, and he was booked up well into next
month. They were busy with the early summer kids and families, just out of
school from the States. Kat usually left him a text message or gave him a
call if she was going to miss dinner. Jock checked his recent calls and
messages again, but there was nothing from her. It wasn’t like her not to
give him a heads-up. He made himself a sandwich, popped open another
cold one, and settled back in on the veranda. The weather forecast predicted
the brisk trade winds would knock down from 20 knots to about 15
tomorrow. "The constant breeze cooled the temperatures down, but the
island's dive operators would welcome a respite from the wind. Jock
phoned the rental business just in case she was tied up there but only got
the recorded business hours message. He thought fleetingly about his son
Jordan who was somewhere in the Atlantic, sailing from Brazil to Miami
with Paul Cayard on the third leg of the Volvo Challenge and his
daughter Megan, who was finishing up her psychology master's degree at
Florida State this summer. He looked at his watch again and thought if I
don’t hear from her by 8:30…I’ll call a couple of her girlfriends.
