Among the medieval buildings along Via Calvalca, the most famous is the Torre dei Caciaioli, today called del Campano (because of the bell that since the end of the 18th century has indicated the hours to university students). It is a building with a square plan that develops vertically and whose western side is characterized by pillars and a pointed arch at the top, while the other sides have smaller pointed openings. Continuing to the east, numerous tower-houses can be seen. On the northern side, after Vicolo Quarantotti, a structure from the middle of the 12th century, also with angular pillars connected by a pointed arch, is succeeded by another of which the eastern pillar and the brick arches corresponding to the various frameworks have been preserved, that allow us to date the building in the 13th century.
On the other side of the road, at the corner with Via del Tidi, there is another tower-house with pillars adjacent to it and, continuing to the east, a large complex made up of at least three units "supported" on each other and dating back to the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth century, made up of pillars with or without upper crowning. At the corner of Via del Porton Rosso, a mansion built in the 13th century has a stone base on which pillars and upper brick arches rise.
In the Middle Ages, this area was characterized by the presence of numerous churches and for being an area where men and merchandise circulated, as well as being a source of attraction for the middle and upper classes of the population, determined to invest. This success is attested by the fact that until the 13th century certain judicial bodies, as well as the salt customs office, the mint and the first synagogue (the Casa del Hebreo) found their headquarters in some buildings in the area.
In addition, the area has been a market area since the 13th century, given the common practice of renting the ground floor of tower houses as a shop to artisans and merchants.
