The opening setting for the book is the location of the murder 10 years past. This takes place at the scenic view of Gros Piton mountain, the 2700 foot mountain located on the southwestern portion of Saint Lucia near the city of Sourfriere. It is a very popular tourist destination due to its relative ease of accessibility compared to its shorter brother Petit Piton. The Pitons are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also one of the 1000 Places to Visit Before You Die book.

Gros Piton
The Bluff
March 29, 2007

Julian Crist made the hike up Gros Piton in St. Lucia's southwester point in just under thirty minutes. Summiting the Piton was a popular tourist excursion, and he and his group had made the trek the day before. This evening, though, Julian ascended only to the Soufriere Bluff, a spot he had found yesterday and determined to be a perfect place to watch the sunset...

The story stays in this local area as all of the action takes place in Soufriere as the characters in the book were staying at the Sugar Beach resort for a destination wedding. The local police investigate several of the locations via "flashback" as the book shifts to being told from the perspective of an American documentary team coming to the island to investigate the claims of Julian's girlfriend that she is wrongfully accused. She has been imprisoned in Jamaica for the past 10 years.
