La iglesia fue edificada en 1348 junto con un convento de dominicos , y originalmente estaba dedicada a San Juan Bautista . En 1474 un incendio la arrasó y en 1511 fue reconstruida con el aspecto actual.
Fue cerrada en 1806, pocos años después de la caída de la República de Venecia , y reabierta en 1813. Actualmente es una de las dos principales iglesias parroquiales de la isla de Murano.
La fachada es de fábrica de ladrillo visto, dividida en tres cuerpos y con portada del siglo XVI, rematada por un gran rosetón. En la fachada izquierda hay un pórtico con arcadas y columnas renacentistas, quizás restos del claustro original. Del mismo lado se encuentra el campanario, que data de 1498-1502.
El interior es de planta basilical , con tres naves divididas por dos series de grandes columnas, y cubierta de madera. El presbiterio es bastante amplio, con bóvedas de medio cañón y dos pequeñas capillas laterales. Aparte del altar mayor, existen otros altares menores, tres por cada nave.
Las obras de arte en la iglesia incluyen un Bautismo de Cristo atribuido a Tintoretto, en la nave derecha, que también alberga dos obras de Giovanni Bellini : una Asunción con Santos (1510-1513) y el Retablo de Barbarigo (1488), tomado de la iglesia de Santa María de los Ángeles. San Nicòlo, Santa Lucia, San Carlo Borromeo de Palma il Giovane también aparecen en la pared derecha. En el ala derecha se encuentra la Capilla Ballarin, construida en 1506 tras la muerte del vidriero homónimo de Murano.

The church was built in 1348 together with a Dominican convent, and was originally dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. In 1474 a fire destroyed it and in 1511 it was rebuilt in its current appearance.
It was closed in 1806, a few years after the fall of the Republic of Venice, and reopened in 1813. It is currently one of the two main parish churches on the island of Murano.
The façade is made of exposed brick, divided into three bodies and with a 16th century doorway, topped by a large rose window. On the left façade there is a portico with arcades and Renaissance columns, perhaps remains of the original cloister. On the same side is the bell tower, dating from 1498-1502.
The interior has a basilica plan, with three naves divided by two series of large columns, and a wooden roof. The presbytery is quite large, with half-barrel vaults and two small side chapels. Apart from the main altar, there are other minor altars, three for each nave.
Works of art in the church include a Baptism of Christ attributed to Tintoretto, in the right nave, which also houses two works by Giovanni Bellini: an Assumption with Saints (1510-1513) and the Barbarigo Altarpiece (1488), taken from the church of Santa Maria de los Ángeles. San Nicòlo, Santa Lucia, San Carlo Borromeo de Palma il Giovane also appear on the right wall. In the right wing is the Ballarin Chapel, built in 1506 after the death of the Murano glassmaker with the same name.
Other paintings include a Saint Jerome in the Desert by Paolo Veronese (also from Santa Maria degli Angeli), the Barcaioli Altarpiece by Giovanni Agostino da Lodi (c. 1500), a Descent from the Cross by Giuseppe Porta, an Ecce Homo of 1495 (perhaps from the destroyed church of Santo Stefano in Murano).
