The church is part of an ecclesiastical complex created by the Jesuit Benedetto Palmi to help poor girls; at the time those who were of marriageable age (called zitelle) but too poor to have a dowry often ended up turning to prostitution, in the hospice they were taught a trade such as sewing or lace so they could support themselves themselves.

17th century sources attribute the design of the church to the architect Andrea Palladio. However, the investigations have not yet been able to find documentary or graphic traces of his intervention: in fact, most scholars express strong doubts about this attribution.

Although the acquisition of the building area from the Giudecca dates back to 1561, the start of the works was after Palladio's death: the first stone was laid in 1581 and the church was consecrated in 1588. In reality, they were already in 1575 and 1576. documented large purchases of construction materials, perhaps for the church. On this basis, some recent hypotheses conjecture a possible Palladian project dating back to the mid-1570s, but neither the façade nor the interior of the church show characteristics unequivocally attributable to the Palladian language, unless it was an extremely clumsy and unfaithful realization. .

The hospice develops in the shape of a horseshoe around the church, leaving space behind the apse of the church for a patio. The façade of the church is on two orders, with two windows and the portal in the first and a large thermal window in the second, which is higher than the two wings of the hospice that surround the church and is surmounted by a tympanum.
There are two small bell towers arranged symmetrically above the tympanum on both sides of the façade, and a large dome with an imposing lantern closes the construction.

Inside, the plan is central and the space is dominated by the vault of the dome. On the left altar there are works by Antonio Vassilacchi: Madonna and Child, Saint Francis and the lawyer Federico Contarini. On the main altar is a Presentation of the Virgin in the temple by Francesco Bassano. On the right altar there is a work by Palma the Younger, Prayer in the garden. The presence of some choirs with direct access to the hospice reveals its close relationship with the church.
