In 1873, a canal was built between Little Clam Lake and Big Clam Lake to move logs. The logs were brought from Big Clam Lake to the lumber mills on the shore of Little Clam Lake.

Little Clam Lake was renamed to Lake Cadillac in 1903, when the town of Clam Lake became Cadillac. Big Clam Lake, to the East, was renamed Lake Mitchell.

Now the lake is used for recreation - boating, fishing, swimming, ice fishing, snowmobiling, and more.

The Lake is part of the Muskegon River watershed. It is fed from Lake Mitchell and flows to the Clam River. The average depth is 11.8 feet.
