According to Wikipedia (French version), "the term Red Light District (De Rosse Buurt) designates the red light districts of Amsterdam, and by synecdoche, the most famous red light district of the city, De Wallen. Under Dutch law, legal prostitution is geographically restricted to "red light districts", which consist of a network of alleys containing several hundred cabins rented by sex workers. These offer their services behind a glass door usually lit in red.

Although De Wallen is the city's best-known red-light district, and has become a top tourist attraction over the years, cabins can also be found in the Spui district and south of the Singelgracht . Also, Amsterdam is not the only city in the Netherlands in which there are red light districts; other cities like Alkmaar or The Hague also have their own red light districts.

During the summer of 2007, the Amsterdam City Hall launched a rehabilitation program for the inner city (i.e. the part bounded by the Singel), with the dual objective of reducing crime there, and capitalize on its resources. This program, called “Project 1012”, in reference to the postcode of the old town (binnenstad) encompasses a multitude of initiatives and legislative updates. The reduction of prostitution, both in the red light district of Singel, and in that of De Wallen, around the Oudezijds Achterburgwal and the adjoining streets, as well as that of the number of coffee shops constitutes one of the main axes of the program2. The objective is thus to reduce the number of shop windows by 40%, which was 482 in 2007".
