From the NRHP nomination form, "In metropolitan areas, consideration of aesthetics in bridge design was important, especially for the monumental, gateway structures. For less monumental bridges, modest aesthetic elements, such as pared-down modernistic design and minimally ornamented railings, were incorporated into the design. While not bridges, the Figueroa Street tunnels that pierce the hills of Elysian Park along the Arroyo Seco Parkway in Los Angeles provide important examples of roadway structures with decorative entrance portals.

Several bridges historically associated with U.S. Highway 66, including the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena and a number of bridges associated with the Arroyo Seco Parkway, have already been listed in the National Register."
