Wie naar de Bult van Putman in Westervoort kijkt, ziet een prachtig natuurgebied met wandelpaden, grazende schapen en een uitkijkpunt. Het is bijna onvoorstelbaar dat één meter onder de grond ruim drie miljoen kubieke meter afval ligt. Wat betekent dit nu nog voor de bodem en het grondwater rond deze voormalige stortplaats?

Twintig jaar lang werden huisvuil, bouw- en sloopmaterialen en chemisch bedrijfsafval gedumpt langs de Rivierweg in Westervoort. Dit gebeurde ongebreideld en zonder milieubeschermende maatregelen. Er ontstond ook een groot gat, vanwege eerdere kleiwinning. Via dit lek sijpelden giftige stoffen als arseen, vanadium en wolfraam in de bodem en het grondwater.

De oude stortplaats in Westervoort sloot in 1990. Pas zestien jaar later kwamen de gemeente en provincie met een saneringsplan, dat in 2015 werd geüpdatet. De kern van de 35 meter hoge afvalberg werd verwijderd en met peilbuizen wordt de kwaliteit van het grondwater gemeten.

If you look at the Bult van Putman in Westervoort, you will see a beautiful nature reserve with hiking trails, grazing sheep and a viewpoint. It is almost inconceivable that one meter underground contains more than three million cubic meters of waste. What does this still mean for the soil and groundwater around this former landfill?

For twenty years, household waste, construction and demolition materials and industrial chemical waste were dumped along the Rivierweg in Westervoort. This happened unbridled and without environmental protection measures. There was also a large hole, due to previous clay extraction. Through this leak, toxic substances such as arsenic, vanadium and tungsten seeped into the soil and groundwater.

The old landfill in Westervoort closed in 1990. It was only sixteen years later that the municipality and province came up with a remediation plan, which was updated in 2015. The core of the 35-metre-high waste mountain was removed and the quality of the groundwater is measured with monitoring wells.
