Leonard Springs Nature Park was once the site of the Leonard Springs Reservoir. Unfortunately, limestone bedrock does not hold water and the Leonard Springs Reservoir was plagued by shortages. Indiana University had to ship water in by train and considered moving out of Bloomington. Heated battles developed between Mayor John Harris, who wanted to expand Leonard Springs, and Indiana University which wanted to move the waterworks to Griffy Greek. After years of stalling, Harris was overruled in 1924 and the Griffy Reservoir was established. Leonard Springs Reservoir was still in use as a water source for a time, then abandoned in the 1940s. Shortly thereafter the dam breached in high water, and what was once reservoir is now wetland. The main trail takes visitors right over the remains of the old dam. This low dam is at the west end of the wetlands, and serves to maintain an appropriate water level there.
