The Marian or Plaque Columns were built in Bohemia and Moravia often as commemorative columns, as a reminder of the tragic events, especially the wars and the plague epidemics.
The column that dominates the square in Benešov nad Cernou was likely built as a memorial to the last plague epidemic in 1714 and the canonization of John of Nepomuk in 1723. The column itself was erected in 1726.
The chronogram are located on the sandstone pedestal. The Roman numerals of chronogram are larger than the other letters and are red color-coded from the rest of the text.

Sloup dominující námestí v Benešove nad Cernou byl postaven zrejme jako památka na poslední morovou epidemii roku 1714 a svatorecení Jana Nepomuckého roku 1723. Sloup samotný byl postaven roku 1726. Socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého stojí na vrcholu trojstranného sloupu s okosenými hranami (trojboký pudorys upomíná na Nejsvetejší Trojici). Na precnívajících rozích podstavce jsou svatí Roch, Šebestián a v Benešove obzvlášt potrebný ochránce proti ohni Florián (mestecko vyhorelo nejméne petkrát). Na trojbokém sloupu tvaru jehlanu s okosenými hranami s barokní korinthskou hlavicí s rostlinými motivy stojí kamenná plastika sv. Jana Nepomuckého v klasickém postoji. Na sloupu zavešeni tri putti. Na nárožích širokého podstavce sloupu stojí sochy sv. Floriána, Šebestiána a Rocha. Okolo sloupu kamenná barokní balustráda. Sochy jsou z mušlového vápence, architektura sloupu je ze žuly. Na reliéfech jsou vyobrazení svetcu; na celní strane sv. Dominik, vpravo zavraždení sv. Václava, vlevo sv. Leonard.
