It was built according to the project of Francesco da Volterra in 1563 by order of Pius IV, and in honor of Saint Pius I, and a monastery was attached to it, an asylum for converted women. These remained there until 1628, when they were transferred to another monastery in via della Lungara and replaced by Poor Clares, who dedicated the church to their holy founder. In 1814 these nuns were also transferred and the church entrusted to the brotherhood of San Gregorio Taumaturgo. After the roof collapsed in the mid-19th century, the church was abandoned. Later, the church and the monastery became the headquarters of the French Seminary of Rome, which rebuilt the church between 1883 and 1890: on that occasion, the façade was rebuilt by Luca Carimini.
