Frente a la Basílica de San Marco, en uno de los lados de la Plaza, se encuentra una pequeña y hermosa fuente de travertino con vistas a la Piazza Venezia, y nos recuerda que nos estamos en el Rione Pigna. Según la tradición, el barrio adquiere su nombre gracias a una piña gigantesca en bronce que actualmente figura en el Patio del Belvedere de los Musei Vaticani y que en la Edad Media apareció por esta zona de la ciudad, entre los restos de las Termas de Agripa.
El origen de esta peculiar fuente, es más reciente, se remonta a los años 20 del siglo pasado. Cuando el Ayuntamiento de Roma convocó un concurso en 1926 para sustituir los "nasoni" (fuentes) de hierro fundido, considerados antiestéticos e inadecuados para el centro histórico de la ciudad, se encomendó al arquitecto y escultor Pietro Lombardi la responsabilidad de diseñar un conjunto de fuentes artísticas que embellecieran los barrios de Roma y, al mismo tiempo, destacar su identidad histórica. Así se crearon nueve obras más pequeñas que se inspiraron en los viejos blasones, los emblemas, la simbología y los aspectos específicos de los distintos rioni: La Fuente de los Libros en el Rione Sant'Eustachio, la Fuente de las Ánforas en el Rione Testaccio, la Fuente de los Artistas en el Rione Campo Marzio, la Fuente de las Tiaras y la Fuente de las Balas de Cañón en el Rione Borgo ( juntamente con la de la Piazza Scossacavalli, derruida el año 1937 cuando se demolió la spina di Borgo y trasladada a Via Cassia en 1964), la Fuente de Monti en el Rione Monti, la Fuente del Barril en el Rione Trastevere, la Fuente del Timón en el Rione Ripa, y la Fuente de la Piña.
Simple y elegante, aunque pequeña, la fuente es alimentada por el Acueducto de Acqua Marcia y dispone de una cuenca pequeña desde cuyo núcleo se origina un tallo. El emblema del rione, la piña, tiene como soporte dos corolas de tulipánes muy estilizadas. El agua fluye a través de los conductos de ventilación laterales y por la parte más alta de la piña, recolectándose en diversos grados hasta llegar a dos cuencas en el fondo, que están rodeadas por cuatro columnas de mármol.
In front of the Basilica of San Marco, on one side of the square, there is a small and beautiful travertine fountain overlooking Piazza Venezia, and reminds us that we are in the Rione Pigna. Simple and elegant, although small, the fountain is fed by the Acqua Marcia Aqueduct and has a small basin from whose core a stem originates. The emblem of the rione, the pineapple, is supported by two highly stylized tulip corollas. The water flows through the side vents and up the top of the piña, collecting to varying degrees until it reaches two basins at the bottom, which are surrounded by four marble columns.
