Está situada en el Foro Romano, en el actual rione de Campitelli. La iglesia data de 1540, cuando la Congregación de los Carpinteros había alquilado la anterior iglesia de San Pietro in Carcere que se encontraba sobre el Tullianum (igualmente llamada cárcel Mamertina). La leyenda considera que es la cárcel en la que san Pedro y san Pablo estuvieron presos.

Se empezó a trabajar en la nueva iglesia en el año 1597 dedicándola al santo patrono de los carpinteros, San José, la primera que se le dedicó en Roma. El arquitecto inicial fue Giacomo della Porta. Se siguió con la obra después de 1602 con la dirección de Giovanni Battista Montano, quien diseñó la fachada y a su muerte (1621) continuó su alumno Giovanni Battista Soria. La iglesia se terminó en 1663 por Antonio Del Grande. La iglesia fue restaurada en 1886 con la construcción de un nuevo ábside.

En los años treinta, la fachada fue alzada sobre el suelo para permitir acceso directo a la prisión inferior. El interior tiene una nave con dos capillas laterales, que fueron decoradas en el siglo XIX. Entre las pinturas hay una Natividad (1651) de Carlo Maratta. It is located in the Roman Forum, in what is now the Campitelli region. The church dates from 1540, when the Carpenters' Congregation had rented the previous church of San Pietro in Carcere, which stood above the Tullianum (also called the Mamertine jail). The legend considers that it is the prison in which Saint Peter and Saint Paul were imprisoned.

Work began on the new church in 1597, dedicating it to the patron saint of carpenters, Saint Joseph, the first to be dedicated to him in Rome. The initial architect was Giacomo della Porta. The work continued after 1602 under the direction of Giovanni Battista Montano, who designed the façade and at his death (1621) his student Giovanni Battista Soria continued. The church was finished in 1663 by Antonio Del Grande. The church was restored in 1886 with the construction of a new apse.

In the thirties, the façade was raised above the ground to allow direct access to the lower prison. The interior has a nave with two side chapels, which were decorated in the 19th century. Among the paintings is a Nativity (1651) by Carlo Maratta. Next to the church there is an oratory, with a wooden ceiling, and the chapel of the Crucifix, from the 16th century, placed between the floor of the church and the roof under the Mamertine prison.

On February 18, 2012 it became a titular church receiving its first cardinal deacon.
