Auf einer kleinen Wiese nördlich der Pfarrkirche St. Stephan in Eggenburg befindet sich ein
Denkmal für Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg. Es handelt sich um eine lebensgroße
Statue mit einem Buch (Bibel?) in der rechten Hand und Blick in den Himmel, die dabei ist, ein Podest aus Steinen über Stufen zu erklimmen.
Die Statue wurde 1993 vom polnischen Künstler Maciej Zychowicz geschaffen. Das
Podest enthält folgende Inschrift:

"Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg (* 1468 in Augsburg als Matthäus Lang;
† 30. März 1540 in Salzburg) war ein Salzburger Erzbischof und Kardinal
sowie ein bedeutender Geistlicher der katholischen Kirche. Bekannt wurde er
auch als fanatischer Verfolger evangelischer Christen, insbesondere der
Täufer. Der bürgerliche Lang erwarb 1507 das Schloss Wellenburg und wurde
nach seiner Erhebung in den Adelsstand Lang von Wellenburg genannt.
Kardinal Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg gehört zu den herausragenden
Repräsentanten geistlicher und weltlicher Macht im deutschen Reich der
ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Zunächst unter den engsten Beratern und
bevorzugten Gesandten Kaiser Maximilians I. ein Diplomat von europäischer
Geltung, der den Kardinalshut zweifach zurückzuweisen imstande war, dann als
Erzbischof von Salzburg einer der ranghöchsten geistlichen Fürsten,
zeichnete sich Matthäus Lang durch historisches Format, diplomatische
'Vernetzung' und durch eine Weltläufigkeit aus."

On a small meadow north of the parish church of St. Stephen in Eggenburg
there is a monument to Matthew Lang of Wellenburg. It is a life-size statue with
a book (Bible?) in its right hand and looking up to heaven, about to climb a
platform of stones over steps. The statue was created in 1993 by the Polish

fanatical persecutor of evangelical Christians, especially Anabaptists. The
bourgeois Lang acquired Wellenburg Castle in 1507 and was called Lang von
Wellenburg after his elevation to the nobility.
Cardinal Matthaeus Lang of Wellenburg was one of the outstanding
representatives of spiritual and secular power in the German Empire in the
first half of the 16th century. First among the closest advisors and
preferred envoys of Emperor Maximilian I, a diplomat of European standing
who was able to reject the cardinal's hat twice over, then as Archbishop of
Salzburg one of the highest-ranking ecclesiastical princes, Matthäus Lang
distinguished himself by historical stature, diplomatic 'networking' and by
