FR Le fort de la Fraternité se trouve sur la commune de Roscanvel. Il fait partie du système de défense du goulet de Brest. Elle est à l'intérieur du dispositif de la presqu'île de Roscanvel barrée par la ligne de défense de Quélern.

Le Fort

La construction date de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, et les modifications de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Elle est composée d'une batterie de 1695, un fort de 1791 et d'une casemate pour projecteur du début des années 1910 sur l'îlot du Diable.

Il avait pour but de protéger l'anse de Camaret des assaillants et de défendre la crique en contrebas du fort. En 1870, il fut abandonné militairement et servit à entreposer du bois et des barils de chaux.

En face du fort, se trouve l'îlot du diable. En 1912-1913, un poste de projecteur est installé. Il avait pour but d'éclairer l'anse de Camaret en cas d'attaque nocturne.

Le fort est en ruines mais on y trouve une poudrière (magasin à poudre avec toiture constituée de grosses dalles rectangulaires et une gouttière de forme élaborée).

Le four de La Fraternité

Le four à chaux est adossé au versant méridional de la colline qui porte le fort. Il date de 1800 et a exploité un filon de roches calcaires jusqu'en 1875. Son état de ruine le rend dangereux par suite des risques de chutes de pierres, voire d’écroulement.

La présence de four fort est liée à une pastille de calcaire datant du dévonien qui se trouve à proximité. La chaux ainsi fabriquée servait pour les constructions locales et militaires.

« Vu de face, il offre une forme trapézoïdale. Au fond de l’entrée, en anse de panier, le défournement, plus ou moins obstrué, est encore visible à la base du four proprement dit, de structure ovoïde. Le gueulard est pour partie envahi par les ronces. L’appareillage extérieur de la construction, assez grossier, est essentiellement constitué de moellons calcaires admettant des veines de calcite blanche, extraits sur place ; ils sont associés à des moellons microgranitiques parfois profondément érodés, contrastant vivement par leur teinte jaunâtre avec le fond sombre des calcaires ».

EN Fort de la Fraternité is located in the town of Roscanvel. It is part of the defense system of the Brest gully. It is inside the device of the peninsula of Roscanvel blocked by the line of defense of Quélern.

The Castel

The construction dates from the end of the 18th century, and the modifications from the second half of the 19th century. It is made up of a battery from 1695, a fort from 1791 and a casemate for a searchlight from the early 1910s on the islet of the Devil.

Its purpose was to protect the cove of Camaret from attackers and to defend the cove below the fort. In 1870, it was abandoned for the military and was used to store wood and barrels of lime.

Opposite the fort is the islet of the devil. In 1912-1913, a projector station was installed. Its purpose was to illuminate the cove of Camaret in the event of a night attack.

The fort is in ruins but there is a powder magazine (powder magazine with a roof made of large rectangular slabs and an elaborately shaped gutter).

The Fraternity oven

The lime kiln leans against the southern slope of the hill which carries the fort. It dates from 1800 and exploited a seam of limestone rocks until 1875. Its state of ruin makes it dangerous due to the risk of rock falls, or even collapse.

The presence of a strong oven is linked to a limestone pellet dating from the Devonian which is nearby. The lime thus produced was used for local and military constructions.

“Seen from the front, it offers a trapezoidal shape. At the back of the entrance, in the shape of a basket, the more or less obstructed opening is still visible at the base of the oven itself, of ovoid structure. The mouth is partly invaded by brambles. The exterior structure of the construction, quite coarse, is essentially made up of limestone rubble admitting veins of white calcite, extracted on site; they are associated with sometimes deeply eroded microgranitic rubble, contrasting sharply by their yellowish tint with the dark background of the limestones”.
