[EN] If the presence of a castle in Moulins is attested in the middle of the
century, it is probable that a feudal mound was located there at the
place since the origin of the city, at the end of the Xth century. The Sires
of Bourbon built it at the top of a slight promontory
of strategic interest, since it was located at the crossroads of
with the river Allier, and terrestrial, with the road linking Paris to
connecting Paris to Languedoc and the one connecting the abbey of Cluny to
its priory of Souvigny. When Moulins became the administrative
administrative capital of the duchy of Bourbonnais, set up in 1327, the
the castle was then probably redeveloped, not only as a defensive
not only as a defensive stronghold, but also as a symbolic representation of
as a symbolic representation of the ducal power. But it is
especially with the principates of the dukes Louis II, in the last third
the last third of the XIVth century, and Peter II, at the end of the XVth century, that
the castle could acquire a grandiloquence and an artistic richness
artistic richness, that the following centuries were going to make
gradually disappear, without seeing the two architectural remains that remain
two architectural remains which remain today: the
Mal-Coiffée and the Anne de Beaujeu pavilion.
