[FR] L’Allier connut de très nombreuses crues au XIXe, approximativement tous les 10 ans : 1835, 1846, 1856, 1866, 1875. Les crues de 1846, 1856 et 1866 sont les plus connues après celle de 1790.
La navigation et le commerce fluvial étaient particulièrement touchés, à l’époque l’Allier était en effet une voie de communication très utilisée. Les ports envahis par les eaux, sont parfois endommagés obligeant leur transfert. Les bateaux, le matériel, les marchandises (vins, charbons, fruit, bois) stockés dans les ports ou chargés sur les embarcations sont emportés ou détruits. Un certain nombre de maisons ont également été détruites lors des grandes crues du XIXe.
