Three bronze sculptures around the Logan Fountain at the south end of Riverside Park celebrate the works of William Inge, the "Playwright of the Midwest." A fourth sculpture portrays Inge seated on a bench. This sculpture, at the northeast quadrant of the fountain plaza, depicts Sammy and Sonny from the play "Dark At The Top Of The Stairs." Sammy, a traveling salesman, must depart for work; Sonny grasps his shirt-tail in a vain effort to prevent him from leaving.
