The fort was built in 1938, comissioned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim
Al Thani in order to protect Qatar's northwest coast and being part of a network of forts with the same mission.

Although relatively modern the fort was built accordingly to the traditional layout and techniques common in the Arab Gulf fortifications: pointed crenellations, type of roof, a combination of round and square corner towers, sloping walls and a square ground plan.

The fort was is use until 1986. Then it became a heritage site open to the public. It's visitable together with the nearby archaelogical site, included in the same ticket.
