The Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz created this work in 2013 as a way of denouncing the situation of the homeless. The original work is in the Regis College of the University of Toronto, in Canada. Subsequently, various replicas were placed around the world —nearly a hundred—, among them in places such as the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Dublin (Ireland), the Cathedral of São Sebastião in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the convent of the Dominicans of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and the Basilica of Saint Peter of the Vatican. In Spain there is another copy in the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid.

The work is located in front of the entrance door to the church of the monastery of Santa Ana, a 12th-century Romanesque-style building. Linked to the Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, this monastery gave its name to the neighborhood of Santa Ana, one of the members of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.
