Legend has it that in the year 880, one Saturday at sunset, some shepherd children saw a great light descend from the sky, accompanied by a beautiful melody, which settled halfway up the mountain. The following week they returned with their parents and the vision was repeated. The same thing happened in the following weeks with the company of the parish priest of Olesa de Montserrat. Aware of the event, the Bishop of Manresa appeared; then they found a cave in which they found the image of Santa María. They tried to take it in procession to Manresa, but the attempt was unsuccessful, which made them understand the divine will: that image should be venerated on the mountain of Montserrat.

The construction of the chapel took place between 1696-1705, thanks to the patronage again of Gertrudis de Camporrell, Marchioness of Tamarit. It is worth noting the vertical location of the chapel on the slope of the mountain, which gives it a sensation of being suspended in the air; It is a beautiful example of integration between architecture and nature.

The chapel has a Latin cross plan, and is inserted under a cave in the mountain, place of the original Holy Cave. On the altar there is a reproduction of the original image, since the authentic one is in the Basilica of the monastery. In the transept there is a hemispherical dome with a skylight through which light enters. This main chapel is attached to a construction with three bays around a small cloister, where there is a room for ex-votos, the sacristy, the pilgrims' room and the dwelling of the monk who is in charge of welcoming pilgrims, as well as a small orchard.
