Sacred Heart Church was organized on August 10, 1894 by the Polish community of New britain as a mission church of St. Stanislaus Parish in Meriden, CT. Originally the church was called St. Casimir the King but was changed to Sacred Heart Church in 1896. The original church, which is now a meeting hall, was located on Orange Street south of the site of the present church. (visit link) The parish soon purchased a plot on Broad Street and construction of the present Gothic Revival style church began in the spring of 1897 to a design by architect George P. B. Alderman. The stone church was completed in 1904.

A set of steps leads up to the main block of the church which is framed buy a Gothic arch topped by a cross. Above the entrance are three false windows and a large circular staine glass window. Above is a three Gothic arches. The central arch has a niche with a statue of Jesus. The other two arches have louvered openings. The apex of the gable roof has a cross.

Flanking the main block are two tall, identical towers. The base of the towers have auxiliary entrances framed within Gothic arches. Above are three connected Gothic arches each framing a vertical pair of stained glass windows. The next level has a single stained glass window. Above is a double set of stained glass windows with Gothic tracery. Each side of the tower has a triangular top with a single window. There are four pinnacles at the four corners of the tower. Rising fron the center is a tall octagonal spire with triangular projections near the top. The spire is topped by a cross.

The sides of the church have four tall windows framed by pointed arches and separated by stone columns. Five sided transepts project from the back of the church.
