[EN] “The parish church of Santa María de los Alcázares, together with the Plaza de Maqueda, forms an interesting complex that was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and in it stands out the Califal Gate, the old entrance to the Arab city (medina). The building is in the Mudejar Gothic style.

The church is made of brick in its lower part and stone, joined by two large pointed arches of Gothic origin to the staircase that leads to the Plaza de la Constitución.

The building consists of three naves separated by arches, with multiple reforms and additions, such as the neo-Mudéjar bell tower restored at the beginning of the 20th century (1908).

The temple has a baptistery decorated with lacework and geometric elements of Mudejar influence.

The church also preserves a baptismal font made with a Corinthian capital of Roman origin, a main altarpiece from the Berruguete school with a plinth of three superimposed bodies and an attic dated 1554, which presents panel and sculpture work, an organ from the 17th century XVII, an altar frontal with Talavera tiles from the 16th century and an interesting coffered ceiling.

The coffered ceiling of Mudejar origin that covers the roof of the main nave deserves special mention. This is a wooden structure in the form of a trough made up of paired braces, rafters or beams located on both sides of the structure and the row or beam that runs along the top of the roof. The panels or skirts of the structure are joined to each other with bourdon files made up of simple beams. They reinforce the angles, some squares or braces resting on their "S" shaped barrels.”
