Inside the Altamura Cathedral is an installation sculpture of the nativity scene. It is date to 1587.
Above the manger scene, several sheep and people (shepherds?) are depicted. One character sits on the right playing a bagpipe type instrument. An internet research indicates this may depict a "zampogna" which is an instrument that originated in these parts of Italy...and its use was associated with Christmas.
