Buckeye was founded as a farming community in 1888. An irrigation canal was built to support the crops by a farmer from Ohio and Ohio's nickname became attached to the new community. Highway 80 passed through the town brining further growth from the tourist industry and several motels from that era can be seen. The interstate system bypassed the town but in Buckeye's case the result has been growth. The expanding Phoenix metro area has created a demand for housing communities and Buckeye's population is exploding.
