La planta de este importante templo es de cruz latina, cubierta por bóveda de cañón, con tres capillas en cada lateral de la nave. El arquitecto fue Gil de Hontañón, quien deja ver formas renacentistas y un gusto por lo clásico (puertas y ventanas adinteladas). La Colegiata fue construida por Juan Vega y Pedro de Tolosa en el siglo XVI.
En el interior se puede contemplar el retablo mayor que diseñó Juan de Herrera y labró el maestro Juan Sanz de Torrecilla en 1579. El primer cuerpo es de piedra de las canteras de Urueña y los relieves del segundo cuerpo muestran motivos de la Pasión y el cuerpo superior lo ocupa una escultura de San Luis Rey de Francia, y en el presbiterio, al lado de la epístola, descansan los restos de doña Magdalena de Ulloa.
A ambos lados del crucero hay otros dos retablos, que reciben las imágenes de San Ignacio de Loyola, fundador de los jesuitas, y de San Francisco Javier.
La Colegiata de San Luis fue fundada en 1580 por la madre adoptiva de D. Juan de Austria, Dª Magdalena de Ulloa. En 1767 Carlos III decretó la expulsión de la Compañía de Jesús y en 1.804 se restableció la orden, por el Papa Pío VIII, hasta la desamortización de Mendizábal.
Tras un siglo, se inició la reconstrucción, cuando sólo quedaba en pie la iglesia y algunos restos. Se inaugura el 28 de Octubre de 1959.
The plan of this important temple is a Latin cross, covered by a barrel vault, with three chapels on each side of the nave. The architect was Gil de Hontañón, who reveals Renaissance shapes and a taste for the classic (lintelled doors and windows). The Collegiate Church was built by Juan Vega and Pedro de Tolosa in the 16th century.
Inside you can see the main altarpiece that Juan de Herrera said and carved by the master Juan Sanz de Torrecilla in 1579. The first body is made of stone from the Urueña quarries and the reliefs on the second body show motifs of the Passion and the body The upper part is occupied by a sculpture of San Luis Rey de Francia, and in the presbytery, next to the epistle, rest the remains of Doña Magdalena de Ulloa.
On both sides of the cruise there are two other altarpieces, which receive the images of San Ignacio de Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, and San Francisco Javier.
The Collegiate Church of San Luis was founded in 1580 by the adoptive mother of D. Juan de Austria, Dª Magdalena de Ulloa. In 1767 Carlos III decreed the expulsion of the Society of Jesus and in 1804 the order was restored, by Pope Pius VIII, until the confiscation of Mendizábal.
After a century, the reconstruction began, when only the church and some remains remained standing. It was inaugurated on October 28, 1959.
