Fue la iglesia parroquial de la localidad de Villanueva del Río, cercana a Aguilar de Campoo. Aparece mencionada ya en documentos de los siglos xi y xii, aunque en su configuración actual se muestra como un edificio construido hacia la segunda mitad del siglo xii, con algunos elementos de transición, como el empleo de arcos apuntados.

El pueblo entero y la iglesia se vieron afectados por el proyecto y posterior construcción del Embalse de Aguilar en la década de 1960, que anegó completamente los terrenos en que se situaban. Para evitar la pérdida del monumento, ya considerado uno de los máximos exponentes del Románico rural norteño, fue desmontado piedra a piedra en su lugar de origen y almacenados todos sus elementos arquitectónicos. Se barajaron varios posibles usos y ubicaciones para el edificio, como servir de nueva ermita para la patrona de Aguilar, la Virgen del Llano, cuya ermita también había quedado inaccesible con la construcción del embalse.

Finalmente, esta y otras opciones fueron descartadas y se optó por su traslado a uno de los parques públicos más concurridos de la ciudad de Palencia, la Huerta de Guadián. Se aprecia aún en la cabecera de la iglesia parte de la numeración de los sillares con la que se sirvieron los conservadores para la reconstrucción. En el traslado, algunos elementos se alteraron o perdieron, siendo el más notable de ellos la torre-espadaña que cerraba el edificio hacia los pies, aunque al menos en parte era posterior a la construcción románica. El edificio permaneció en estado de obras desde 1972 hasta el año 1980. En ese año, la Dirección General de Arquitectura concedió una subvención de siete millones de pesetas, que permitieron concluir la reconstrucción con éxito.

It was the parish church of the town of Villanueva del Río, near Aguilar de Campoo. It is already mentioned in documents from the 11th and 12th centuries, although in its current configuration it is shown as a building built around the second half of the 12th century, with some transitional elements, such as the use of pointed arches.

The entire town and the church were affected by the project and subsequent construction of the Aguilar Reservoir in the 1960s, which completely flooded the land on which they were located. To avoid the loss of the monument, already considered one of the greatest exponents of the northern rural Romanesque, it was dismantled stone by stone in its place of origin and all its architectural elements were stored. Various possible uses and locations for the building were considered, such as serving as a new hermitage for the patron saint of Aguilar, the Virgen del Llano, whose hermitage had also been made inaccessible with the construction of the reservoir.

Finally, this and other options were discarded and it was decided to move it to one of the busiest public parks in the city of Palencia, the Huerta de Guadián. Part of the numbering of the ashlars with which the conservatives used for the reconstruction can still be seen in the head of the church. During the transfer, some elements were altered or lost, the most notable being the tower-belfry that closed the building towards the feet, although at least in part it was built after the Romanesque construction. The building remained under construction from 1972 to 1980. In that year, the General Directorate of Architecture granted a grant of seven million pesetas, which allowed the reconstruction to be completed successfully.
