En los últimos años se ha instalado una terraza en el patio durante los meses de verano, y poco a poco va ganando popularidad como lugar de encuentro entre los madrileños.
El origen de la iglesia luterana de la Castellana data de principios del siglo XX. En aquel entonces, a pesar de haber libertad de culto en España, el culto evangélico no estaba bien visto. Por esta razón, la comunidad protestante llevaba a cabo sus celebraciones de manera clandestina. Esto explica por qué razón la iglesia se encuentra en una ubicación tan discreta.
En 1907, el alemán Fritz Fliedmer pidió un préstamo para la construcción de un templo evangélico. Finalmente, le fue concedido, la iglesia se inauguró el 27 de enero de 1909. La Iglesia Evangélica Alemana de la Paz es pequeña, pero tiene un encanto muy especial.
El interior es de estilo neorrománico alemán, y alberga algunas piezas de gran valor histórico y artístico, como la lámpara de estilo visiogótico o el mosaico neobizantino con la imagen del Cristo Pantocrátor. Llama la atención las dimensiones del púlpito teniendo en cuenta el reducido tamaño de la iglesia.
Durante la Guerra Civil, los republicanos saquearon la iglesia y la utilizaron a modo de almacén. Una vez finalizó el conflicto bélico, los alemanes la restauraron, pero sin que pudiera practicarse el culto evangélico ya que estaba perseguido por el régimen franquista.
Con la llegada de la democracia, la Iglesia Evangélica Alemana de la Paz recuperó su función original. En la actualidad es un punto de encuentro de la comunidad evangélica en Madrid.
En Navidad, se celebra en el templo un mercadillo tradicional alemán bautizado con el nombre de Adventsbasar. Hasta él acuden miles de madrileños que aprovechan para conocer la iglesia evangélica.”
