" C’est sur le rocher, près de la Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Espérance, que le Diable prenait siège pour observer l’un de ses ennemis Saint-Samson qui était en train de bâtir une grande église, aujourd’hui la Cathédrale de Dol-de-Bretagne.

Et c’est depuis ce siège que le Diable ulcéré de voir construire ce monument, se saisit d’un rocher et le projeta sur l’édifice pour l’écraser mais il avait mal calculé sa trajectoire et la pierre ne détruisit que le haut de la tour nord. C’est pour cette raison qu’il manque la partie supérieure de la tour.

La pierre termina sa course dans le champ Dolent, et a donné son nom au menhir éponyme.

Sur ce même rocher, vous pourrez observer d’autres marques, ce sont celles des griffes du Diable. Elles sont le vestige du combat du Diable avec son ennemi le plus redoutable l’Archange Saint-Michel.

La légende de ce combat :
Après que le Diable ait construit l’abbaye du Mont Saint-Michel et qu’il contemplait fièrement son œuvre, l’Archange Saint-Michel le mit au défi de réaliser une semblable merveille, il se plaça en haut du Mont-Dol et, en une seule nuit, édifia un gigantesque palais de cristal, brillant de tout son éclat au soleil levant. Le Diable, vaincu et dépité, s’apprêtait à détruire son propre travail lorsque Saint-Michel lui proposa d’échanger leurs chefs-d’œuvre respectifs, ce qui fut sur le champ accepté.

L’Archange Saint-Michel prit donc possession du mont, qui porte à présent son nom, tandis que le Diable s’installait dans le château éclatant de l’Archange. Mais les murailles qui semblaient de cristal étaient en réalité de glace que le soleil, en s’élevant, fit fondre. A la fin de la journée, il n’en restait qu’une mare. Inutile de décrire la rage de Satan, réalisant comment il avait été floué. Leur bataille fut rude et le Diable, précipité par son adversaire, laissa la marque de ces griffes sur le rocher en essayant de s’y accrocher avant de tomber au pied du Mont-Dol."
