La basílica de San Juan de Baños se encuentra ubicada en el casco urbano de la localidad de Baños de Cerrato, perteneciente al término municipal de Venta de Baños, en la comarca de Cerrato. La Basílica fue declarada Monumento Nacional en el año 1897. Representa un claro ejemplo de fusión de la cultura visigoda dentro de la dualidad hispanorromana y germánica dando como resultado el edificio más significativo de la arquitectura religiosa del reino hispanovisigodo. Considerada como la iglesia en pie más antigua de España, fue construida y consagrada en el año 661 tal como atestigua la lápida conservada en el arco triunfal del templo. La tradición vincula su edificación a la voluntad del monarca visigodo Recesvinto, quien según la tradición tras aliviar sus problemas nefríticos en las aguas de su manantial decide consagrar un templo a San Juan Bautista en agradecimiento. A lo largo de los últimos trece siglos la basílica ha sufrido numerosas modificaciones y reconstrucciones. En origen los muros se construyen con sillares de piedra bien escuadrados. En su interior se reutilizan restos de edificios romanos de la zona, como capiteles y los fustes de las columnas. Se emplea el arco de herradura, con el canon visigodo. La cabecera original tenía forma de tridente con tres capillas separadas entre sí por espacios intermedios. Está se verá modificada en el siglo XIV, los huecos intermedios se convierten en dos nuevas capillas dando lugar a una cabecera con cinco espacios. Con el tiempo desaparecen los muros más exteriores dando lugar a la estructura actual.

La ornamentación escultórica es relativamente clásica, tradicional y austera, de los ocho capiteles de su interior, seis de ellos se encuentran esculpidos en una clara tradición romana. En el año 1974 se recupera el rito Hispano visigodo mozárabe, como fiesta de larga tradición e historia, celebrándose anualmente en torno al 24 de junio y se incluye dentro de las Fiestas de San Juan Bautista.

The Basilica of San Juan de Baños is located in the urban area of ??the town of Baños de Cerrato, belonging to the municipality of Venta de Baños, in the Cerrato region. The Basilica was declared a National Monument in 1897. It represents a clear example of the fusion of Visigothic culture within the Hispano-Roman and Germanic duality, resulting in the most significant building of religious architecture in the Hispano-Visigothic kingdom. Considered the oldest standing church in Spain, it was built and consecrated in the year 661 as attested by the tombstone preserved in the triumphal arch of the temple. Tradition links its construction to the will of the Visigothic monarch Recesvinto, who according to tradition, after relieving his nephritic problems in the waters of his spring, decides to consecrate a temple to San Juan Bautista in gratitude. Throughout the last thirteen centuries the basilica has undergone numerous modifications and reconstructions. Originally the walls are built with well squared stone ashlars. Inside, the remains of Roman buildings in the area are reused, such as capitals and the shafts of the columns. The horseshoe arch is used, with the Visigothic canon. The original apse had the shape of a trident with three chapels separated from each other by spaces between them. It will be modified in the fourteenth century, the intermediate gaps become two new chapels giving rise to a head with five spaces. Over time, the outermost walls disappear, giving rise to the current structure.

The sculptural ornamentation is relatively classical, traditional and austere, of the eight capitals inside, six of them are sculpted in a clear Roman tradition. In 1974, the Hispanic Visigothic Mozarabic rite was recovered, as a festival with a long tradition and history, celebrated annually around June 24 and included within the Festivities of San Juan Bautista.
