As soon as the Civil War ended, these communities established their own African American churches. Founded in 1864, Malone’s Methodist Episcopal Church was the first to be built.

Before the Civil War, Methodist Camp Meetings were popular in the area.
Following the Civil War, four African-American churches were built in nearby local communities. In 1864, Malone Methodist Episcopal Church on White Marsh Road was the first to be established, followed by Christ Rock Methodist Episcopal Church near Cambridge in 1875, then Jefferson Methodist Episcopal Church here in 1876, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Harrisville in 1880.
