The Congregational parish in Chesterfield was organized on October 30, 1764. The first church was built in 1768. In 1791, the place where the church was located became part of Goshen, MA. The church was disassembled and moved to the present site. The present church was constructed in 1835 by Jonathan Warner using some material for the previous church.

The Greek Revival style building has a set of steps leading up to a landing in front of a shallow two story high entrance block topped with a pediment. The landing has a ramp on the west side and stairs on the right side. The entrance block has two doors and 4 by 6 pane double hung windows with black shutters above.

Rising from the pediment and the gable roof is a two stage tower. The upper stage is a belfry with rectangular louvered windows. The tower is topped by a widow's walk.

The front of the main block has 4 by 6 pane double hung windows with black shutters flanking the entrance block on the lower and upper levels. The sides of the church are five bays deep. The west side has matching windows on the upper and lower levels. The east side has nine such windows and an addition projecting from the lower level of the fifth bay.
