"The Sint-Maria Pomp or Mariapomp is a former public water pump in the Dutch city of Utrecht.
The pump structure was placed on the Mariaplaats in 1844 and consists of bluestone with metal elements (crank, lantern and two spouts in the shape of a lion's head). Water had been extracted at and around this location long before that time and the water was renowned. During the great cholera outbreaks in the 1870s in the city of Utrecht, this was one of the few public pumps with clean water. Not long after, the construction of a drinking water supply through pipes began in Utrecht. The public pumps were eventually closed and many of them demolished. In 1931, the Mariapomp was removed but reinstalled in 1975. It can no longer draw water from it because (among other things) the crank has been fixed. The pump is rated as a national monument."
