La iglesia de San Esteban es, desde hace muchos años, la única parroquia del pueblo. Su monumentalidad es la admiración de todo el que pasa por el pueblo.
Pero en realidad, la iglesia que ahora vemos de San Esteban, no es la original. Hubo otra anterior mucho más pequeña, cuya largura se extendía desde donde hoy están las puertas de ingreso hasta donde comienzan las escalerillas para subir al altar mayor. Pero de aquella primitiva iglesia en sí no se conoce mucho más.
Aquella primera iglesita se fue derribando poco a poco a medida que se construía la iglesia actual y fueron necesarios 300 años para verla terminada tal y como hoy la contemplamos.
Las obras empezaron hacia 1545 por la capilla del Altar Mayor y se terminaron en 1822 al cerrarse la bóveda y terminarse el tejado.
Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón fue el arquitecto que proyectó o “hizo las trazas” de la iglesia; así lo acreditan varios documentos históricos como Noticias de los Arquitectos y Arquitectura de España (página 217) además de su Testamento (pág. 318-319).
Gaspar Solórzano fue el encargado de los trabajos de cantería.
Exterior
Capilla del Altar Mayor
La Capilla del Altar Mayor se hizo alrededor de 1523 a costa de la caridad del pueblo. Tiene dos arcos en forma ojival de unos veinte metros de altura. Sobre estos arcos y los muros, sostenidos por fortísimos estribos, descansa la bóveda, adornada con nervios entrelazados de claro estilo gótico.
Fachadas Laterales
En 1566 se terminó de edificar la parte gruesa del edificio, es decir, las fachadas laterales y parte de la bóveda así como las dos portadas laterales, tal como se pude ver en los dos rótulos que hay en la puerta del sur y que dicen: “Año 1566, Pontífice Máximo Pío V” y “Rey, Felipe II”. En los años siguientes, prosiguieron los trabajos de cantería de las portadas. Rodrigo Riaño labró los pilares y puso la estatua de San Esteban en la puerta del norte.
La obra de madera y el tejado se hizo en 1573, trayendo para ello grandes vigas de Sahagún y Fuentes de Nava.
Los arranques del los arcos del coro se hicieron en 1575 y en este mismo año se suspendieron las obras de cantería sin aún terminarse de hacer la parte trasera de la iglesia. El motivo fue la muerte de Rodrigo Gil en 1577. Fueron necesarios 200 años más para que se reanudaran de nuevo las obras de esta parte de la iglesia.
Fachada de Poniente
Bajo la dirección de Meabe, ya a finales del siglo XVIII, se prosiguieron y se terminaron las obras. Fue en estos años cuando se hizo la fachada de poniente con sus dos torres, tal como hoy se encuentran. Se empleó para ello la piedra sacada de los muros de la Fortaleza. En plenas obras sobrevino el terrible terremoto de Lisboa de 1755 dañando la fachada y causándola la raja que aún se aprecia. Por tal motivo hubo que cerrar la puerta de poniente que a juzgar por sus dimensiones debería haber sido la principal.
Al estallar la guerra de la Independencia (1808-1814) tuvieron que suspenderse una vez más las obras. Una vez que ésta terminó se continuaron los trabajos y en 1822 se cerró la bóveda quedando así finalizada la iglesia.
En la torre norte se colocaron las campanas y en la del otro lado la maquinaria del reloj de la villa hasta que este se trasladó al lugar que ahora ocupa.
The church of San Esteban has been, for many years, the only parish in the town. Its monumentality is the admiration of all who pass through the town.
But in reality, the church that we now see of San Esteban is not the original. There was another much smaller earlier one, whose length extended from where the entrance doors are today to where the stairs begin to go up to the main altar. But not much else is known about that primitive church itself.
That first little church was demolished little by little as the current church was built and it took 300 years to see it finished as we see it today.
The works began around 1545 on the chapel of the High Altar and were finished in 1822 when the vault was closed and the roof was finished.
Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón was the architect who designed or “drew the plans” for the church; This is confirmed by various historical documents such as Noticias de los Arquitectos and Arquitectura de España (page 217) as well as his Testament (pages 318-319).
Gaspar Solórzano was in charge of the stonework.
Chapel of the Main Altar
The Chapel of the Main Altar was built around 1523 at the expense of the town's charity. It has two pointed arches about twenty meters high. On these arches and the walls, supported by extremely strong abutments, rests the vault, adorned with intertwined ribs in a clearly Gothic style.
Side Facades
In 1566 the thick part of the building was completed, that is, the side facades and part of the vault as well as the two side portals, as can be seen in the two signs on the south door that say: “Year 1566, Pontiff Máximo Pío V” and “King, Felipe II”. In the following years, the stonework of the covers continued. Rodrigo Riaño carved the pillars and placed the statue of San Esteban on the north door.
The wooden work and the roof were made in 1573, bringing for it large beams from Sahagún and Fuentes de Nava.
The removal of the choir arches were made in 1575 and that same year the stonework was suspended without the rear part of the church being finished. The reason was the death of Rodrigo Gil in 1577. It took 200 more years for the works of this part of the church to resume again.
west facade
Under the direction of Meabe, already at the end of the 18th century, the works continued and were completed. It was during these years that the west façade with its two towers was built, just as they are today. The stone taken from the walls of the Fortress was used for this. While the works were in progress, the terrible Lisbon earthquake of 1755 occurred, damaging the façade and causing the crack that can still be seen. For this reason, the west door had to be closed, which, judging by its dimensions, should have been the main one.
At the outbreak of the War of Independence (1808-1814) the works had to be suspended once again. Once it was finished, the works continued and in 1822 the vault was closed, thus completing the church.
The bells were placed in the north tower and the town clock machinery was placed in the other side until it was moved to the place it now occupies.
