The temple, of modern invoice, was built between 1947 and 1953 by the architect Juan Crisóstomo Torbado at the initiative of the Bishop of León (between 1944 and 1970) D. Luis Almarcha Hernández. The building was solemnly inaugurated for worship on August 29, 1953. Torbado followed the sober lines of the purist Renaissance: Latin cross plan, elevation of three naves with three sections, the central one notably wider and higher, roofs consisting of sections of vault of barrel -to which lunettes are practiced, a detail more typical of the Baroque- and, on the transept, a coffered dome resting on pendentives. The twin towers of the main façade measure 40 m.

The most outstanding architectural element of the temple is the old Baroque portal taken from the ruined Monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza, a Benedictine monastery located 22 km from the city of León, in Santa Olaja de Eslonza (municipality of Gradefes) which today is hardly some stones remain standing and part of whose heritage is scattered in various convents and churches in the province. This doorway, thus preserved from certain destruction, was dismantled and reassembled to integrate it into the main façade of the new temple, with quite a harmonious result. This cover was erected in its original place in 1711 by the famous architect Fray Pedro Martínez de Cardeña, as evidenced by an inscription over the main door, as a cartouche.
