From the Smithsonian website, "Description:
Two nude, headless figures -- one male, one female -- placed atop inverted cones, which in turn are set atop a gateway comprised of two columns topped with a three foot frieze. The frieze and columns have relief figures.

The sculpture was commissioned to commemorate the 1984 Olympics and symbolizes a gateway to the Coliseum. The Olympic Arts Festival organizers, headed by Robert J. Fitzpatrick, selected the sculpture. The headless figures were modelled after a waterpolo player and a sprinter, who took part in the 1984 Olympic games."
