Martha Reben, née Rebentisch, grew up in New York City. A victim of tuberculosis, she attempted a cure by camping in the wilderness. In the process she wrote the following books about her experience in the wilderness:

The Healing Woods (1952)
The Way of the Wilderness (1954)
A Sharing of Joy (1963)
