It is a monumental church, in neo-Gothic style, built at the end of the 19th century.

It was conceived as the most ambitious work at that time for the town, taking advantage of its economic expansion based on commercial activity as a crossroads between the Meseta and Santander; whose port was at its peak overseas; time that it was going to change its image of a rural town, for a new, more urban one, receiving the title of city, in 1895 from the hand of Queen María Cristina. Added to this impulse was the arrival in 1879 of an enterprising parish priest, Ceferino Calderón, capable of understanding the new economic and social situation in Torrelavega.

The work was entrusted to a renowned architect, José María Basterra, with extensive experience in religious construction, who, according to José María Martínez y Ramón, the father, asked for "a temple in which majesty and simplicity confraternize; spacious for four thousand people and, above all, urge him not to talk about numbers, not to formulate calculations, let alone a budget"
