Unveiled in July 2019, a giant red apple greets visitors at the Johnny Appleseed rest area on Route 2 westbound in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Along with a roadside attraction role, the huge piece of fruit promotes the area's hospitality and economic development in conjunction with the visitor information center whose premises it adorns.

Standing over eight feet tall, this bright red monument is topped by a thick brown stem and a green leaf. The south face is emblazoned with a set of pictograms arranged in the shape of an apple and a website address for the Visit North Central Massachusetts organization. The icons represent the region and some local activities: a mountain, pine tree, a beer mug, water, golf hole, fish hook, soccer ball, hiking, skiing, and running. White text beneath the images reads:
