The bridge is in a country park in the parish of Chevet. It originally carried part of Seckar Lane but is now a foot and cycle path to the southwest of the lake which is part of Newmillerdam Country Park.

The country park was once part of an estate which was owned by the Pilkington family and was maintained as a site for hunting. The track over this bridge would have been used by the game keepers in the woods whilst looking after the birds and keeping the estate in order.

Car parking is available at the northern end of the lake, and the area has many footpaths in the woods around the area.

This particular track also forms part of the Wakefield Way, a 75 mile long circular walking route around the Wakefield Metropolitan District. The walk is divided into 11 walks and this bridge is on the southern part of walk 1 between Anglers Country Park and the village of Notton.

The middle arch has a metal frame that has been added as extra support.

The railway line Under the bridge

The footpath / cycleway between Old Royston and Newmillerdam was originally part of a branch of the Midland Railway intended as a direct route to Bradford and Scotland, avoiding Leeds. The project was abandoned through lack of funding when the route reached Thornhill Junction. It was opened in 1905 and closed to scheduled trains in 1968.

It is now a 'rails to trails' route for walkers and cyclists.
