The Horbury West Curve was 1 mile 1187 miles long and connected the Leeds to Sheffield via Castleford railway line with the Calder Valley Line.
The Leeds to Sheffield via Castleford railway line is a north to south line that branched to Barnsley from Wakefield off the Calder Valley Line.
The Calder Valley Line was an east to west route that connected Leeds to Manchester.
The Horbury West Curve allowed trains on the east to west Calder Valley Line to connect with the north to south Leeds to Sheffield via Castleford railway line without heading to Wakefield and then changing.
The line opened in 1902 and closed to passengers in 1961 and then to freight in 1991 when the line was disconnected at both ends.
The Calder and Hebble Navigation
The Calder and Hebble Navigation completed in 1770 consisted of artificial improvements to the River Calder and River Hebble to allow canal boats use what used to be un-navigable rivers.
It ran for 21 miles from the Aire and Calder Navigation at Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge, was one of the first navigable waterways into the Pennines. It was an extension westwards of the Aire and Calder Navigation.
