El término torico viene dado especialmente al pequeño toro que corona la fuente y le ha dado su mismo nombre, también es una muestra del habla de la zona, ya que normalmente el diminutivo en otros dialectos del español sería torito o "torillo". La fuente se encuentra situada en el centro de la Plaza del Torico de Teruel.
Esta fuente tiene una gran columna de 7 metros que está coronada por un toro de reducido tamaño con cuatro pequeñas estrellas situadas en cada punto cardinal de la parte superior de la columna, mientras que en la parte baja cuatro cabezas de toros escupen agua que cae a la base de la fuente.
La primitiva fuente que se construyó en este lugar eran unos aljibes y databan de 1375, aunque fue sustituida dos veces para que el 11 de noviembre de 1855 se inaugurase la actual.
La fuente actual sustituyó a otra realizada en el siglo XVI por el ingeniero francés Quinto Pierres Vedel responsable de la construcción del Acueducto de los Arcos y la canalización de las aguas y sus fuentes.
Durante la Guerra civil española, en el año 1938, la familia de los Gómez Cordobés, retiró y guardó al torico en un lugar seguro para protegerlo de los bombardeos.
La fuente fue restaurada en el año 2003.
El 19 de junio de 2022 la columna que sostiene al torico se desplomó debido a los trabajos de retirada de unas cuerdas atadas al monumento para la celebración de un acto taurino. El accidente terminó con la popular imagen con visibles daños.
La composición del monumento y sus elementos aluden a una leyenda sobre los orígenes de la ciudad que se remonta al siglo XII, durante la Reconquista llevada a cabo por el rey Alfonso II, cuando iban buscando un lugar para levantar un asentamiento, soltaron un toro que se detuvo justo debajo de una estrella. En este punto fue donde comenzó a levantarse la actual ciudad a la que se llamó Toruel.

On June 19, 2022, the column that supports the bull collapsed due to the removal of some ropes tied to the monument for the celebration of a bullfighting act. The accident ended the popular image with visible damage.
