El edificio del Millón o del Colegio de Arquitectos domina un espacio singular de la ciudad. Su elegancia siempre resaltó en este lugar, hasta donde se había desplazado el centro político con el traslado del Ayuntamiento tras dejar la plaza de San Pedro, acogiendo también a la Diputación. Aquí llegaron casas de vecinos ilustres que aún perduran como la de Antonio Mora Claros, hoy centro social de la Junta; la de la familia Checa, sede de la UGT; o el propio edificio del Millón, de Juan Quintero Báez, sede del Colegio de Arquitectos.
Otros edificios públicos y religiosos significativos se perdieron en una calle que sufrió el mal gusto en la transformación urbanística, iniciado en los sesenta y que llegó hasta ayer mismo.
El ejemplo más llamativo es el de la propia Casa del Millón. La adquisición y rehabilitación para sede del Colegio de Arquitectos abrió una esperanza en lo que supondría mantener el patrimonio. Su resultado externo mantiene la fachada original y el interior se adapta a nuevas plantas.
Hasta ahí todo bien, o al menos asumible por los criterios de hacer rentable una intervención así. Sin embargo, se remata con una estructura de hierro que no sirve para nada, no tiene función arquitectónica alguna. A lo sumo del ‘gusto’ del restaurador por dejar su impronta, que ya se asume en el ‘taco’ de añadido entre las dos torres.
Esta semana saltó la noticia de que el Colegio de Arquitectos crea una comisión de seguimiento para futuras restauraciones patrimoniales. La pregunta es qué criterios van a tener o, mejor dicho, visto lo visto en su propia sede ¿es esto lo que se persigue o sorprenderán eliminándo los hierros?
La participación de los arquitectos es clave para el desarrollo y trazado de una ciudad e, igualmente, importante es no estar sujeto a su exclusivo pensamiento. La ciudad es un conjunto de elementos que la hacen propia, por lo que es necesario escuchar a quienes la viven, que no son otros que los propios ciudadanos que en muchas ocasiones tienen la libertad de no coincidir con los arquitectos.
Esta comisión es, sin duda, una muestra de preocupación por el patrimonio que hay que aplaudir, pero se hace necesario escuchar a muchos más actores de la ciudad. Para evitar un arco en una rampa de la iglesia de San Sebastián, que tabiquen el depósito de Tomás Curbelo en Zafra, que no se dejen caer fachadas y aparezcan híbridos como el hotel París...
Lo que sí es cierto es que en los últimos años hay una mayor sensibilidad municipal por las actuaciones en el patrimonio arquitectónico, la última muestra es la papelería Muñoz.

So far so good, or at least assumable by the criteria of making such an intervention profitable. However, it is topped with an iron structure that is useless, it has no architectural function. At the most of the 'taste' of the restorer for leaving his mark, which is already assumed in the 'taco' of addition between the two towers.
This week the news broke that the College of Architects creates a monitoring commission for future heritage restorations. The question is what criteria are they going to have or, better said, given what has been seen in their own headquarters, is this what they are pursuing or will they surprise by eliminating the irons?
The participation of architects is key to the development and layout of a city and, equally important, is not to be subject to their exclusive thought. The city is a set of elements that make it its own, so it is necessary to listen to those who live it, who are none other than the citizens themselves, who on many occasions have the freedom to disagree with the architects.
This commission is, without a doubt, a sign of concern for heritage that must be applauded, but it is necessary to listen to many more actors in the city. To avoid an arch in a ramp of the church of San Sebastián, that the Tomás Curbelo warehouse in Zafra be partitioned, that facades not be dropped and hybrids such as the Paris hotel appear...
What is certain is that in recent years there has been a greater municipal sensitivity for actions in architectural heritage, the latest sample is the Muñoz stationery.
