"The first fallen who lie in this cemetery had to die as early as 1939, when there were isolated acts of war in the border area. The large number of victims, however, dates from 1944 / 45.

Many of the fallen could not be buried on the Kasteler Höhe as a result of the fighting,
but were first buried in the woods and fields, and in larger numbers also in municipal cemeteries. After 1945, the 500 or so dead buried in individual graves were joined by another 900 who were recovered from scattered sites. Each grave is marked by a name stone. Stone crosses, arranged in groups of three, are scattered throughout the cemetery.
