This gravestone was originally had a cross on top, but the shaft has broken and the head of the cross is leaning against the base.

The bottom name on the memorial relates to William A. Lee.

The initials N.Z.E.F. indicate that he was a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

New Zealand had become a crown colony of the United Kingdom in 1841, and by 1907 at the request of the New Zealand Parliament, King Edward VII proclaimed New Zealand a Dominion within the British Empire, reflecting its self-governing status.

When World War I started New Zealand offered to provide troops to aid the UK in the war and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was established.
