In Loving Memory Of
CHARLES DOWSON OF PINDER GREEN, METHLEY
SERGEANT OF THE 10TH HUSSARS
WHO AFTER SURVIVING THE GREAT WAR WAS KILLED
IN A TROOP TRAIN DISASTER IN IRELAND
ON JUNE 24 1921 AGED 28 YEARS
The 10th Hussars was a cavalry regiment originally formed in 1715.
The gravestone mentions the troop train disaster in which he died, but not the cause.
In 1921, the whole of Ireland was part of the UK, but some of the population wanted independence.
Charles Dowson was on a troop train with 113 men of the 10th Hussars and 104 horses under the command of Capt Lord W Montague Douglas Scott MC. They had been part of the Royal Escort in the Kings trip to Belfast, and were returning to their barracks in Belfast.
The train was derailed in a terrorist attack carried out by Sinn Fein who were fighting for their independence.
