In the first, he studied elementary at the Colegio de los Escolapios and secondary at the Institute of Jaén, obtaining a bachelor's degree in 1865. In the second, following the family tradition, he brilliantly completed his Law degree, culminating in 1871 with an extraordinary prize. , immediately granting him the degree of doctor for the memory that dealt with Recognition of the Jury.

His university years coincide with an intense turmoil in Spanish life, close to the September one that was to overthrow Isabel II. By then, despite his youth, he has clear ideas about the situation in the country and has begun to define the ideology that he will defend permanently. A democrat by conviction, he always maintained a position of moderation, far from radicalism of any sign.
