To reach the summit of Black Mountain and the bolt, go south on Forest Road 16 (Black Mountain Road) from the turnoff on U.S. 14 and park either at the lower/2WD trailhead (N44 44.630 W107 23.880) or the upper/4WD recommended trailhead (N44 44.280 W107 23.275). Hike approximately one mile past the upper/4WD trailhead on a well-maintained trail to the summit. The bolt has been driven into the large (10x5') summit boulder, about 3 feet east of the east railing of the fire lookout.
