EN: On the northern edge of the village of Saint-Léonard is the entrance to the underground lake. This lake is the largest known underground lake in Europe. The lake is about 300 meters long and about 20 meters wide. The water temperature is 11 degrees all year round.
Its existence has been known to the locals for centuries, but it was not until 1943 that it was first explored. At that time the water level was almost at the cave ceiling. The great earthquake of January 1946 caused the water to sink a few meters and settle at its present level. Since 1949, boat tours have been offered on the lake. Between 2000 and 2003, the cave had to be closed and secured because a boulder had come loose from the ceiling.
The boat tours are conducted by multilingual guides with large rowboats and last about half an hour.
FR: A la limite nord du village de Saint-Léonard se trouve l'entrée du lac souterrain. Ce lac est le plus grand lac souterrain connu en Europe. Le lac est large d'environ 300 mètres à 20 mètres. La température de l'eau est de 11 degrés toute l'année.
Son existence était connue des habitants depuis des siècles, mais ce n'est qu'en 1943 qu'il a été exploré pour la première fois. A l'époque, le niveau de l'eau était presque au plafond de la grotte. Le grand tremblement de terre de janvier 1946 a fait descendre l'eau de quelques mètres et l'a stabilisée à son niveau actuel. Depuis 1949, des excursions en bateau sont proposées sur le lac. Entre 2000 et 2003, la grotte a dû être fermée et sécurisée car un bloc de roche s'était détaché du plafond.
Les excursions en bateau sont menées par des guides polyglottes à bord de grandes barques à rames et durent environ une demi-heure.
DE: Am Nordrand des Dorfes Saint-Léonard befindet sich der Eingang zum unteriridschen See. Dieser See ist der grösste bekannte unterirdische See Europas. Der See ist rund 300 Meter lang und etwa 20 Meter breit. Die Wassertemperatur liegt das ganze Jahr bei 11 Grad.
Seine Existenz war den Einheimischen scon seit Jahrhunderten bekannt, aber erst 1943 wurde sie das erste Mal erforscht. Damals lag der Wasserspiegel fast bei der Höhlendecke. Das grosse Erdbeben vom Januar 1946 führte dazu, dass das Wasser einige Meter sank und sich auf dem heutigen Niveau einpendelte. Seit 1949 werden Bootstouren auf dem See angeboten. Zwischen 2000 und 2003 musste die Höhle geschlossen und gesichert werden, da sich ein Felsblock aus der Decke gelöst hatte.
Die Bootstouren werden von mehrsprachigen Guides mit grossen Ruderbooten durchgeführt und dauern rund eine halbe Stunde.
